1984 riots: Trial court to wrap up cases in six months

New Delhi :The Delhi High Court directed the trial court to wrap up the four cases pending in the 1984 anti-Sikh riot cases within six months.Former parliamentarians Sajjan Kumar and Jagdish Tytler are amongst those accused of instigating mobs that killed over 3,000 Sikhs across Delhi in the days following the assassination of prime minister Indira Gandhi in October 1984.
The Delhi High Court had directed the CBI to appoint a special public prosecutor for handling the 1984 anti-Sikh riot cases on the lines of the Gujarat riot cases. Advocate Vikas Pahwa, appearing for CBI, informed the High Court that senior advocate R S Cheema and Y K Saxena have been appointed to handle trial court cases while Additional Solicitor General A S Chandhiok will be handling 84'riots cases in the High Court.
Similarly senior advocate B S Joon will be handling its trial court cases of 1984 anti-Sikh riots while senior advocate H J S Ahluwalia will be handling cases pending in the High Court.
The court made these observations while hearing a PIL filed by an NGO seeking its direction to appoint special law officers and to monitor the cases on a day-to-day basis. A division bench of Chief Justice A.P. Shah and Justice Rajiv Sahai directed the trial court to conclude the trials in all four cases within six months. The court also appointed a special public prosecutor and an advocate to argue the cases in the trial court and the high court. The court was hearing an appeal by the 1984 riot victims who pleaded for speedy trials.
The petition also states that the 'CBI took four years to file chargesheets in the cases and this is despite the fact that the issue was raised in both houses of parliament.' The petition states 'Whatever little action has been taken by the government is only an eye wash to show that something is being done. By virtue of its persistent inaction, the government has really made a farce of the whole system. Most of the persons, who are accused in these cases belong to the ruling party and there is every likelihood and apprehension in the minds of the victims as well as the general public that the government is not serious about securing due punishment for the guilty. .
