Jammu:Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today highlighted the potential of pilgrim tourism in the state, saying that about 80 lakh devotees yearly visit Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine alone. "If we are able to attract only ten percent of this pilgrim influx to other places in Jammu and Kashmir it will give considerable boost to tourism sector," he said while chairing a meeting of Katra Development Authority (KDA) here. Abdullah, who is also chairman of the KDA, said the development of Katra, the base camp to the cave shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi, should be designed according to futuristic needs of the town. Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand, also the Vice Chairman of KDA, called for a holistic approach in the development of Katra, saying the importance of the pilgrim town was becoming more significant with the increase in the number of pilgrims to the holy shrine. Meanwhile, the state government today offered certain concessions to such Vaishno Devi pilgrims who would extend their tour to the other places in the Kashmir valley. The concessions include free entry tickets in Tulip Garden, SPS Museum, Zabarwan Park and Nagin Club in Srinagar, besides concessions on Gandola riding tickets at world famous ski resort at Gulmarg. This was announced by Minister for Tourism and Culture Nawang Rigzin Jora, while interacting with the representatives of various Tour and Travel Associations of the state. |
